Electric Highway

The Electric Highway is a proposal for installing a series of high-powered level-three charging stations between Perth and Margret River in Western Australia. This will allow Electric Vehicles (EVs) to break free from the city and reach a favourite holiday destination. The realisation of the Electric Highway would be the first in Australia and one of the first in the world.

The eight major international automotive OEMs have adopted the “Combo-Charging System”, which we want to use for the Electric Highway. Combo allows EVs to charge with either AC or DC current and is capable of providing up to 50kW of power. These stations can charge a typical EV within twenty minutes from empty to full.

Electric vehicles provide a realistic carbon emission free alternative to petrol/diesel vehicles. The Electric Highway would provide access to otherwise remote popular parts of Western Australia for electric vehicles. Showing that electric vehicles are no longer restricted to local or central areas would help improve the viability of electric vehicles to purchasers whose number one concern is limited range. By creating the Electric Highway, Western Australia can reaffirm its commitment to advanced environmentally friendly technologies and maintain our image as an innovative state.

So far, the following organizations have expressed an interest to participate in this project:
- UWA Engineering
- UWA Business School
- WA Department of Transport
- Galaxy Resources
- CO2Smart

Routes

The route alternatives are presented as an initial proposal. Charging stations should ideally be positioned at locations that already provide amenities such as power, toilets, shelter, vehicle service, food, drink and the possibility of natural attractions. This would improve station users’ experience and utilise existing infrastructure.
